I decided to create a Yahoo! Personals account and it was truly one of the best decisions I have ever made.
In May 2004 I graduated from Western Carolina University in the mountains of North Carolina and, just a day after graduation, was quite fortunate to start a software engineering position with a firm in Atlanta, Georgia. After moving to Atlanta, I was immediately faced with one big problem -- I am a people person and I did not know a single person in my new location! I wasn't interested in the club/bar scene anymore; however, it was getting harder to meet people. So I decided to join Yahoo! Personals, and that single decision has literally changed my life forever.
A specific search pays off
Luckily for me, when I signed up I knew exactly what I wanted in a partner -- and more importantly, I wanted to settle down. What better way to narrow your search than to specify countless constraints about your desired partner in hopes of finding the perfect match?
“I wanted a girl who shared various traits that I possessed”
I wanted a girl who shared various traits that I possessed -- a nonsmoker, no drugs, a college degree, 24-25 years old, living near me, etc. I was very specific since I wanted to get into a serious relationship.
At the very end of 2004, I met the girl of my dreams. Shay was beautiful, funny, could cook, good morals, loved children, good family, loved animals, and had ALL of my minimum requirements and so much more. After finding her using the easy-to-use search engine within Yahoo! Personals, I was lucky enough to talk to her via Instant Messenger and email a few times before meeting her in person for the first time. In fact, the last time that we talked before meeting in person, we talked on the phone for nearly eight hours STRAIGHT! That's incredible!
Chemistry on both sides
Our first date went very well and I was blown away. I just knew that my life was going to change immediately and boy, was I right! For the first five weeks, we literally saw each other every single day. There was chemistry on both sides and it was very strong. Even though we lived about 50 miles apart, we still made an effort to see each other every day.
After dating for just six weeks -- yes, that is six weeks -- I knew that I loved Shay and she loved me, so I proposed to her!! We were both so much in love! We got engaged after a romantic dinner on Valentine's Day 2005 and had a beautiful wedding in October 2005.
She is a second grade school teacher and I am a software engineer. We bought a beautiful new house and are so happy together.
This is a true story and we have Yahoo! Personals to thank for this absolutely incredible connection.
Success tips from Brian:
 • Be honest. Don't be afraid of the concept but be careful in your searches.
 • Use the search features and the messaging system to help increase your changes of finding that perfect person.
 • First date: Shay and I went to On The Border (a Mexican eatery). We also saw a movie.

6 weeks? Geez, where's the fire? How do you really know someone after just six weeks of dating? And what's with seeing each other every single day right from the start, even though they live 50 miles apart? That's just not practical - I bet it's not even true. See, everyone wants a quick fix, and relationships are not the place to go for that. If these two are real, and I bet they aren't, they'll be divorced just as soon as they were married. Bad form with your fake article, Yahoo!, bad form.

That is STUPID. You don't get married after knowing someone for 6 weeks. That is why the divorce rate is what it is today. For a good, solid foundation to be built upon with trust and true feelings to be honed, there needs to be more time. Yahoo! should try to post more stories about taking your time, and for people to not be frivolous with one's future. Hope you guys signed a prenuptial agreement and have good divorce attorneys waiting in the wings. That is if this fictitious, idiotic couple even exists.

I hope the two of you have a wonderful life together. When reading the comments left about the article, I got a little upset. Who are all of you to say that you can't know if you love someone after dating them for only 6 weeks? If it is true love, I believe you know immediately. And as far as them liveing about 50 miles from each other and seeing each other every day.... That's wonderful. Yeah it might not be practicle. But I believe that if you are willing to go the distance to find something great.. you will. I met my boyfriend on Yahoo Personals as well. He told me he loved me before we even me. Because he lives almost 4 hours away we talked for a month before we met. So it is possible to love someone after only knowing someone for a short period of time. To the ones who don't believe that you cna love someone after knowing them for a short period of time. The divorce rate is so high now because it is too easy to get a divorce. I was married once before and I knew him for years before we dated and got married. So whether or not you know the person for a while, there is still the possiblility of a divorce.... That's a risk you have to take.
